Law Enforcement Exam – Strategies For Reading Comprehension Questions
Many law enforcement candidates react to reading comprehension questions by thinking, “This part of the test is going to really slow me down.” And, to a degree this part of the test will slow you down. However, if you follow the strategies described in this article you will be able to complete your test at a steady pace and gain valuable points.
Most police entrance exams emphasize reading comprehension. Why? Because to properly perform their jobs, law enforcement officers are expected to understand and comprehend what they read.
Reading comprehension questions will typically be based on one or more situational paragraphs, or require a candidate to determine the proper course of action to take based on reading police rules and procedures.
Firstly, I would suggest you do a lot of reading before taking the test. Newspaper and magazine articles can improve your concentration and your ability to understand what you read. Read with purpose. Underscore details and ideas that appear crucial to the meaning of the articles. Identify the writer’s point of view and their supporting information. When you finish with an article, summarize it. Ask yourself, what was the author’s purpose in writing the article? What was the main idea. What was the article’s focus, key information and words?
Another suggestion is to take practice law enforcement exams. The best practice exams will include reading comprehension sections taken directly from actual exams used by law enforcement agencies.
Here are seven proven strategies to help you pass the reading comprehension part of the law enforcement written exam:
1. Skim the answers before reading the passage. This will let you know what to look for while reading. As you read the passage, mark or circle anything that answers a question. Continue reading that passage until you’re done. Don’t answer the question until you’ve read the entire passage because you’ll break your concentration.
2. Ask yourself after you read a paragraph, “What exactly did that paragraph say?” Spend a couple of seconds summarizing the contents of the paragraph. While doing this look at the paragraph to help you remember where important information is located.
3. Without fail there will be one or more questions asking you to identify the main idea. Usually a passage will have a few sentences stating the author’s main idea. While reading, underline these sentences. This will save you valuable time.
4. Underline key words, phrases and facts, such as dates, names and events.
5. If you are totally confused by a sentence or phrase in the passage, read the sentence before and after the difficult sentence to clarify its meaning. If you’re still confused, move on. Don’t dwell too long or you’ll lose valuable time.
6. Try to visualize by forming a mental picture of the events described in the passage as you read. When you are able to visualize something, it’s easier to comprehend.
7. Answer the questions based on the information in the passage, not prior knowledge. If you don’t agree with something stated in the passage this is not the time to argue your point. Remember your goal is to get the highest score. In this part of the test, you are being tested on your ability to read and comprehend, not your knowledge of the subject.
Do’s and Don’ts
Do read actively, not passively. Pause briefly after each paragraph to think about the points made by the author. Jot down a brief outline as you go.
Don’t get too concerned with details as you read a passage, especially long passages. Just take notes of where the details were in the passage. You can quickly list statistics, numbers, dates, names titles, etc.
Do pay attention to the passage structure. Is it organized chronologically, by comparison of two or more arguments, or was there some other classification system? This will help you locate details later.
Do summarize the passage. Take a few seconds to recap the main idea of the passage. This may help you answer several questions quickly.
In summary, if you follow these simple tips and strategies you will find reading comprehension test questions far easier to answer correctly. Remember read with purpose. By far the most effective method to help you hone your skills and build your confidence, besides reading newspaper and magazine articles, is to take actual practice exams used by law enforcement agencies.

Questions to use on an interview with police officers?
I am a Criminal Justice student and our next project is to interview two police officers and compare and contrast their answers. So far, the questions I have are:
-Why did you become a police officer? Did you find what you expected? Why or why not?
-What are the worst parts of your job?
-What are the best parts of your job?
-Would you recommend policing as a career to others? Why or why not?
-Based on your experience, what level of education do you think police applicants should be required to possess? Why?
-Are you for or against the death penalty? Why?
I need two more questions for my questionnaire. Oh and by the way, the Professor of the class is the Assistant Chief of the Bakersfield Police Department, so it would be a good idea for me to make a good impression. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Police Oral Board Interview – Addressing Illegal Drug Use Questions
If you want to become a police officer, and you’ve used drugs in the past, then the best thing to do is to come clean about it. If you try to withhold prior drug use from the interview panel, or the polygraph examiner, you’ll be disqualified immediately. Although you’ll be asked questions concerning past drug use during the polygraph test, the oral board raters may ask you about it as well.
Some departments will not allow you to continue in the recruiting process if you’ve used drugs within the last 2-3 years. So if you’re considering a career in law enforcement, then I would highly recommend that you stay clear away from drugs. The drug use policy varies from department to department, but I wouldn’t chance it by sneaking a few puffs weeks before your interview. Why do I say that. I knew of a recruit, who actually got high the night before his polygraph test. Needless to say, he was eliminated on the spot.
The bottom-line here is to always be up front about past drug use. I don’t care what drug it might have been. If you’ve done marijuana, or other drugs, simply be up front about it. Departments realize there are quite a few qualified applicants who might have made a mistake or two in their life, but the ultimately sin is lying about it. That is inexcusable, and grounds for disqualification.
How to address Illegal drug question:
The best way to answer an illegal drug question is to remain calm and the tell the truth. Be completely honest during both the polygraph and the oral board interview. There’s no certain way to get booted from the hiring process than to withhold past drug use from the interview panel and/or the polygraph examiner.
If you are truly serious about becoming a cop, I encourage you to start preparing for the police written exam, police academy and the oral board interview. You can get helpful tips on how to pass all three by visiting http://www.PoliceOralBoardInterviewSecrets.com – Police Interview Questions

5 Forbidden Interview Questions
As the MD of a recruitment agency for all kinds of online marketing and online travel jobs, I know how stressful interviews can be for a candidate. Whenever you travel to a job interview, it is only natural that on the way you’ll try and think about every possible question that you might be asked and try and devise an answer to them. But there a few that you can cross off the list, as there are some interview questions that potential employers simply aren’t allowed to ask…
How old are you?
It may seem like a very innocuous interview question, but due to the new age discrimination laws, it is now illegal to ask a candidate how old they are. It isn’t just older people who complain about age discrimination – many younger candidates claim they are discriminated because they are too young, with employers assuming that they will not have the experience or maturity for the position.
An exception to this rule is when a candidate’s age is classed as a “genuine occupational qualification”. This applies in the army and the police, for example, which have minimum ages for employment. Of course, that doesn’t apply to my candidates who are looking for online marketing jobs, and it probably won’t apply to most jobs that you are likely to apply for – if someone asks you for your age (this includes date of birth questions on application forms) they are straying into dangerous territory.
Are you married?
This might come across as an ice breaker, and sometimes it is – but for many employers this isn’t a casual interview question. Some employers prefer single employees, regarding them as being more committed to their careers, unlikely to become bogged down in family commitments, and more willing to do overtime or long distance travel for a job. Other employers prefer married employees who may be steadier and more reliable. Either way, you don’t have to answer this question in an interview.
Do you intend to start a family in the near future?
This is a big no-no in an interview situation. For obvious reasons, some employers aren’t keen on their employees having children, with resultant issues of outside commitments, maternity/paternity leave and flexible working requests. An employer can ask if for any reason you may have any difficulties with certain aspects of the job; travel abroad, being away from home for extended periods of time, doing large portions of overtime where necessary and so on, but they cannot ask direct questions about family circumstances.
Are you a member of a trade union?
Employers aren’t allowed to ask about your outside associations in an interview, such as your membership of trade unions. These associations don’t have any bearing on your capacity to do the job, and could be used to discriminate against you. This extends to political and religious organisations as well, so if any questions crop up concerning your political or religious commitments these topics are very much out of bounds.
Are you gay?
Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation is illegal, and it is difficult to think of an acceptable reason why a potential employer would need to know this information. In addition to questions about sexual orientation, most questions about your personal life are illegal – for example, asking someone if they drink heavily as a form of recreation.
If you are faced with one of these interview questions, it is best to remember that in all likelihood your interviewer doesn’t realise that they are doing something wrong. Directly confronting them and embarrassing them is unlikely to secure the position. You have the choice of politely asking the interviewer why the question is relevant to the position (giving them the chance to rephrase the question), or you can try and answer the question indirectly. For instance, if someone asks about marital or family commitments, you could use it as an opportunity to state your strong commitment to your work and your willingness to work long hours (that is, if you really want the position!) But make sure you know your rights, and always remember the interview questions that your potential employer cannot ask you.
