Best Training for Law Enforcement Officers
As a law enforcement officer, you know that staying in shape is an important part of your job. You also know that it’s extremely difficult to find the time to work out consistently.
Let’s face it, fitting in an hour or two of exercise every day is just not very realistic in your hectic, demanding schedule. That’s why you need to focus your work outs on the type of exercise to give you the best results in the shortest amount of time.
And the type I recommend is high intensity exercise – especially hill and stair sprints. These techniques allow you to get the most out of your precious workout time. Helping you build strength, power, speed and stamina while burning maximum amounts of fat – all in much less time than a traditional workout.
There are numerous reasons that high intensity is the way for you to go. Here are the Top 3:
1. Hill Sprints Build the Stamina Necessary For Your Job Demands.
Endurance is something that every law enforcement officer needs – but it is a special kind of endurance. If you want to perform at your peak, then long, slow distance types of cardio just won’t work. Your endurance training needs to mimic the demands of your job. Those needs being – short bouts of intense exertion alternated with periods of long periods of lower intensity.
Think about it. How often does your job require you to jog at a low intensity for long periods of time? Or even run at a steady, moderate pace for 20 or 30 minutes in a row? Yet, these are exactly the types of demands that long, slow cardio workouts prepare you for.
On the other hand, high intensity work, like hill sprinting, provides you with interval training that meets your needs. It will take your heart and lungs to intensities far greater than those found in jogging or traditional types of endurance training. Your body will become used to reaching these higher levels, and recovering quickly in between the “sprints.” Not only that, with hill sprints, you will be able to spend much more time training at that high intensity than if you try to “go hard” at a steady state.
This type of training can lead to more protection for your heart and lungs than traditional “cardio”. Long, low intensity cardio can actually shrink the size of your heart and lungs because your body is excellent at adapting to the stresses placed on it. Training long and slow encourages your body to become as efficient as possible to make the exercise easier. The result: it shrinks muscle mass along with your heart and lungs. This has the effect of decreasing your reserve capacity – the ability of your cardio-vascular system to respond to high stress situations (exactly the kind your run into in your job). Without a high reserve capacity, your heart and lungs may be at risk during stressful events. High intensity training can help raise your reserve capacity instead.
Not only that, but more and more scientific studies are showing that VO2 Max (the traditional measure of aerobic endurance) is improved as much – or more- by using high intensity exercise like hill sprinting. This endurance is due to the sprints upgrading your oxygen intake system with new capillaries, developing stronger heart and lung tissue, adding more energy producing mitochondria and increasing your tolerance to lactic acid buildup.
Want the ability to respond to high intensity situations (and recover quickly afterwards)? Then train the same way.
2. Hill Sprints Give You Results In As Little As 15 Minutes.
Sure, this training sounds great – but how much time does it take?
Truth is, you can get these benefits in short workouts of 15 minutes or less – only 2 or 3 days per week.
High intensity work, especially hill and stair sprinting, is an incredibly efficient way to exercise. This stems from the fact that you must do more work in a shorter period of time. In other words, hills and stairs are like the perfect combination of strength training and sprinting – you literally “lift” or “push” yourself up the incline. The steeper the incline, the more demand is placed on your leg muscles. This intensity allows you to get in a superior workout in a very short period of time.
3. Hill Sprinting: The Incredible Stress Buster
The bad news: Your position as a law enforcement officer brings a great deal of stress along with the job. This stress can lead to health-related problems like heart disease and metabolic syndrome.
The good news: One of the best ways to “bust” that stress is with exercise – more specifically high intensity exercise.
Exercise in general relieves stress in a number of ways. First of all, exercise stimulates your brain to release substances (endorphins) that improve your mood. Besides that, exercise can decrease cortisol levels, provide a distraction from the source of stress and boost your self confidence.
Any exercise can have these effects, but high intensity can amplify your results. Recently, researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia showed that high intensity exercise is superior in reducing anxiety and stress. The 2003 study even showed that the effects can be felt 30, 60, even 90 minutes after an exercise session.
These are just 3 of the reasons that every law enforcement officer should hill sprint. Take your endurance to a new level and reduce your stress in only a few minutes of exercise per week with this “old school” training. You, your fellow officers and those you serve and protect will be glad you did.

Careers in Law Enforcement-Police/Patrol
Police and detectives pursue and apprehend individuals who break the law and then issue citations or give warnings. A large proportion of their time is spent writing reports and maintaining records of incidents they encounter. Most police officers patrol their jurisdictions and investigate any suspicious activity they notice. They also respond to calls from individuals. Detectives, who often are called agents or special agents, perform investigative duties such as gathering facts and collecting evidence. The daily activities of police and detectives vary with their occupational specialty—such as police officer, game warden, or detective—and whether they are working for a local, State, or Federal agency. Duties also differ substantially among various Federal agencies, which enforce different aspects of the law. Regardless of job duties or location, police officers and detectives at all levels must write reports and maintain meticulous records that will be needed if they testify in court.
Do you agree with this Immigration policies have led nation to essentially ‘import a poverty class?
This is in response to The Californian’s March 24 editorial, “Immigration reform that helps growers, consumers, economy.” I have no argument with the view that there could be intelligent immigration reform that could help growers, consumers and the economy. However, I have yet to see anything that comes close from Congress that could accomplish that worthy goal.
When it comes to immigration statistics, the numbers can be, and are, bent to support any position advocated. On this subject, Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, one of the most influential and powerful congressmen on Capitol Hill, stated, “We’ve been duped.”
Let me toss out a statistic that I can only back up from personal experience and the best determination of hundreds of my colleagues in various roles with the former Immigration and Naturalization Service: Eighty-five percent of those granted amnesty under the last legislation meant for special agricultural workers did not qualify for that benefit; many had simply purchased a farm letter.
The bona fide applications for asylum are privately considered even less in numbers. In other words, as communicated to me by a humble Armenian immigrant years ago, “We imported a poverty class.”
The “amnesty” bill was largely written by an INS regional bureaucrat who never met a payroll in his life, nor competed with foreign nationals for your business. Much of today’s legislation is written and promoted for private gain by immigration attorneys who stand to make millions from a new amnesty.
The old amnesty legislation was sold to Congress and the American people with the emphasis that the federal government would get tough on employers hiring illegal aliens; isn’t that the song they are singing today? Illegal immigration a hot topic at the time, but if you were to go to the extensive index of then-President Reagan’s diary, you would not be able to find one entry or comment on immigration whatsoever.
At that time, the attorney general of the United States, while touring the Los Angeles federal building, leaned over and asked a supervisory detention officer, “Who do you work for, son?” “I work for INS,” he answered. The attorney general whispered, “Is that one of mine?”
The INS commissioner at that time famously addressed New Yorkers in a speech: “The first thing I’m going to do is take care of the nasty Puerto Rican immigration problem!” Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens.
Eighty-eight thousand U.S. Department of Homeland Security workers and 200,000 DHS contractors simply cannot clean up the mess created from the last amnesty and now, at a time when our social services are strained to the breaking point, the prisons are releasing violent felons early, the job market is tanking, and The Californian’s “view” is that the time couldn’t be better for another amnesty?
Allow me to make the assertion that it is arrogant and jingoistic to assume that all immigrants are here for a “better life” or fled their native countries. Many I talked to can’t wait to go home once they earn enough money. If money is the underlying reason for the immigration, isn’t it a little shallow of us to assume that money alone is the answer to a better life?
If it is about the money, then let’s make it fair for all. Let’s clear the backlog of immigrants, hundreds of thousands of them who have been waiting for over 10 years to move legally from places all over the world to join up with family, obtain the job that will make their life better and embrace our laws, language and citizenship.
Gregory Meinhardt of Bakersfield is a former immigration inspector at LAX; an immigration enforcement agent based in Los Angeles; senior special agent for immigration and customs enforcement at Port of Long Beach; and national program manager at ICE’s Office of Investigations, policy unit. His opinions do not reflect U.S. government viewpoints, policy, directives or legal positions. Another View is a critical response to a Californian editorial, column or news story.

When You Should Start Planning Your Career: Guide for Students
There are a number of discussions concerning the time when people have to think of their future careers and professional plans to be completed. In fact, career planning is a pure personal decision, and much depends on person’s attitude to this aspect and to this life. What this article suggests the reader is a list of periods when people try to think of their careers and have to think of their career in order not to waste this life and the right to be an integral part of society. Childhood When you are a child, many people ask you the same question: “What you want to be when you grown up?” Of course, you try to give clear and comprehensible questions in order to demonstrate your abilities and knowledge. As a rule, boys confess that they want to be police officers, secret agents, astronauts, or firemen, and girls dream about being teachers, models, singers, or designers. Though some ideas remain to be dreams, the first steps in career planning are taken exactly in this period. School When you are a student at school, you do not actually think about your future career and activities to prefer. You try to learn as many subjects as possible or, vice versa, try to avoid any types of tasks. Frankly speaking, school is not the time to think of careers but the time to study and grasp the basics of life. College After you finish the school, it is time to choose a college/university. And it is high time to think about your future career, plans, and interests. As a rule, college students have to know what profession to choose in order to decide on their majors and be able to improve the necessary skills in time. This is why you have to evaluate all aspects of your life (such as demands, finance, abilities, time, family relations, etc) to be sure that your career choice is justified. After college After you graduate the college, you should not plan your career but be completely involved in it. You have to earn money, think about present and future, and be ready to assist your children doing the same. Good luck!

Passing The Police Oral Exam Is A Matter Of Not Being Caught Off Guard
Copyright (c) 2010 Donald Cirillo
The police oral exam is only part of the process of becoming a police officer. It isn’t even necessarily the most important part either. But for many people it is the most intimidating.
People figure that on the police written exam it is between them and the piece of paper. As long as they remember the answers, they are fine. But during the oral exam you have to talk face to face with the officers you are being interviewed by. This can make a person feel very “on the spot” and this can lead to a lot of nervousness.
But there are things you can do to prepare yourself for passing the police oral exam. In fact, taking the time to prepare yourself is the absolute most important thing there is. Without studying and preparation, there is hardly any point to taking the exam at all.
Set time aside every day for studying. Treat this exam like you would treat any other that is important to you. You need to be diligent in spending time on it.
Learn about what kinds of questions are likely to be asked in the police oral exam. You will be expected to think on your feet and effectively come up with answers that make sense. Also, you need to be able to present your answers clearly and concisely. Rambling or slurring your words will take points away.
Something that people facing the oral exam should do is get someone to help them practice. Get somebody who is willing to sit and “drill” you on the sorts of things that are likely to be asked in the exam. This won’t be exactly like sitting in front of seasoned officers, but it will at least acquaint you with some of the terms you want to use, and help you become more comfortable with talking about the subjects.
While there are many tips that have to do directly with the police oral exam, one of the most important applies to any sort of exams. Be confident. Confidence will take you a long way if you know how to master it. You need to be calm, collected, and realize that you are just as good as any of the other applicants for the job.
The other side of this is to not be cocky. While you are just as good, you need to remember that you do have stiff competition, and acting flippant or overly aggressive isn’t going to impress your interviewers.
Finally, during your preparation and the exam itself, start thinking like a police officer. In all reality, this is what they are really looking for. You interviewers want to know if you have what it takes to think and act like a cop. Instead of waiting until you have passed your exams, start practicing this right away.
Get a good study guide to help you with the police oral exam and the police written exam. This will help you to make the most of the time and effort you spend studying, and will make it more likely that you will pass the exam with ease.
For more information about how to become a police officer and the police oral exam check out the Police Oral Exam Digital Manual found at http://www.policepath.com which offers you police oral exam strategies & practice situations.

Yet, the Dept of Homeland Security is focusing on so-called right wing extremists that are only a threat to tyranny.
Has anyone read the Rightwing Extremism Report?
http://wnd.com/images/dhs-rightwing-extremism.pdf
The Report specifically mentions the following political beliefs that law enforcement should use to determine whether someone is a “rightwing extremist”:
* Opposes abortion
* Opposes restrictions on firearms
* Opposes lax immigration
* Opposes the policies of President Obama regarding immigration, citizenship, and the expansion of social programs
* Opposes continuation of free trade agreements
* Opposes same-sex marriage
* Has paranoia of foreign regimes
* Fear of Communist regimes
* Opposes one world government
* Bemoans the decline of U.S. stature in the world.
* Upset with loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs to China and India
* . . . and the list goes on
