How to professionalize the security industry
How to professionalize the security industry
After more than 400 years the private security industry in the UK can claim advances in proficiency yet continues to fall behind in its pursuit of professionalism. As a private security analyst, I’ll tell you why I believe the industry needs to do more to break away from a public perception that has it as no more than a force of ‘night watchmen.’
I strongly believe that there is no room in the industry for watchmen. Instead, the industry needs to develop a clear career path for those who join, and demonstrate that it is an industry with the ability to make a significant contribution to the overall security of the country.
As a store detective, I worked with a number of the country’s larger retailers. Constant contact with customers enabled me to track a variety of situations but, after around 3 years there are two incidents that remain with me.
The first happened during my first day on duty at a store in Camberley. A couple entered the store and headed for the coat section. The lady removed a coat from the hanger, tried it on and casually walked over to the exit and with her partner made a run for a waiting car-The cost of the coat… £900 – Why high value coats were not protected better and why were they so close to the exit? These are questions I asked myself.
So with this in mind whenever I was assigned to a retail store, during my store tour, I identified items of high value and determined whether they were positioned in a location that facilitated their easy removal from the store. I always submitted my findings with suggestions for improved security to the store management. Some managers cooperated but most of them didn’t. After all I am only a ‘security,’ what do I know?
On another occasion I was assigned to a store in London Colney. It was located in the middle of nowhere, and no more than two minutes from the motorway. Two big retailers shared the site.
The store I guarded had two fire exits that opened towards the motorway. The toilets were situated between the two stores. For me, this meant that a shoplifter could take bags of merchandise towards the toilet but since technically they are still within the confines of the store security could not interrogate or apprehend them.
The biggest problem though was the merchandising of the stock. There were high value coats and jackets at the entrance. I raised my concerns in discussion with the store manager and gave him the benefit of my professional opinion, but he did nothing. Within a few hours of our discussion, seven of the jackets were snatched. Again, I was proven right.
You see, the store’s location made it easy for shoplifters to drive up to the store, make a quick grab, dash and speed off back onto the motorway. After that incident I advised the manager to remove the rest of the jackets from the entrance. He informed me that the plan for arranging merchandise on the shop floor comes directly from their head office. I suggested that maybe he needed to call the head office and inform them that his store was located in the middle of a ‘free for all’ and the current layout was unsuitable for this location. He listened but never acted on my advice. A few days later thirteen of the jackets were stolen. Finally he decided to remove them from the entrance. But his organization had already lost £5000.
Why didn’t the manager listen to me? Maybe it’s because Security officers have always had a love hate relationship with retail managers.
At times I feel that security is seen by most security buyers as a grudge purchase or an unneeded expense, instead of an investment. The main reason for this perception has been the industry’s inability to clearly define its role in the security pyramid of the UK. Everyone knows that the Police are responsible for enforcing the law, the Armed Forces defend sovereignty, MI5 and MI6 are internal and external operatives. Who or what is a security officer? How does the industry define itself? In marketing there is a saying that it’s not what is said but how it is said. It seems to me that the industry has been unable to define itself to the country and sadly for those who have chosen private security as a vocation.
Four Hundred Years On
The concept of private security is not a modern phenomenon. In fact, private security existed in the UK before the police force. Cave drawings and other archaeological findings clearly attest to the fact that the issue of safety has long been the concern of man from the beginning of time. The earliest security officers can be traced back to the 1600s when out of the desire to protect their property, wealthy merchants established a private security force known at the time as ‘Shiver and Shake Watch’. This was followed by the Bow Street Runners and eventually the Marine Police Force, sometimes known as the Thames River Police and believed to be England’s first professional Police force.
It was formed in 1798 by magistrate Patrick Colquhoun and a Master Mariner John Harriott, to tackle theft and looting from ships anchored in the Pool of London and the lower reaches of the river… The 1800s saw the creation of what can be considered the modern police force when the concept of the rights of the individual began to take hold. For the first time tax revenues were used to pay for night watch.
With the development of trade and the expansion of the free market economy also came laws that illegalised many previous practices. At the same time an increase in serious crime brought pressure to bear on the local constabulary and forced officers to prioritize their response,
Once again wealthy individuals decided to purchase their own security. This saw emergence of a more wide spread and professional private security industry. Like most privately owned businesses, the private security industry was left to operate under its own code. The result was near anarchy as criminal gangs drifted into an increasingly profitable industry.
In an attempt to regulate the industry in 2001, parliament enacted the Private Security Industry Act. That led to the formation of the Security Industry Authority.
Today’s security industry is a far cry from the night watch of yester year. It is a multi-billion pound global industry, employs three times more people than the police and engages in a raft of activities from event management to ferrying millions of pounds each day to businesses around the country. More recently it has become involved in the transportation of prisoners,
However, the industry is faced with a number of very important questions:
Step One to Professionalizing – Definition
As security professionals how do we define ourselves? And what powers do we have? If we are to dispel the notion that we are just night watchmen to be called upon as the need arises, the issue of definition needs to begin with the government, police and other stalwarts of security in this country. We are a significant part of the security structure and we are on the frontline of the prevention and maintenance of law and order. But we are a 21st century force with a sixteenth century mandate. We face modern day challenges and are expected to tackle them without the necessary tools or legislation. Consequently, the professionalizing process has to begin with an amendment in the Private Security Industry Act that provides a clear definition of our roles and powers.
Step Two to Professionalizing – Training
Whilst on duty in Camberley, I noticed two women stuffing their handbags with jewelry. I radioed CCTV control to keep a watch on them while I observed them from a distance. When they were satisfied that they had taken enough, they walked out of the store without paying for the merchandise. There were already two security officers positioned at the exit, so as they exited the store they were apprehended. While leading them towards the holding room, one of the ladies dropped to the floor at the entrance of the store and refused to stand up. It took three officers almost forty-five minutes to safely move her to the holding room.
A few weeks after this incident, I was assigned to a store in Cheshunt. While patrolling the aisles, I noticed a female customer remove a scarf and jumper and concealed them in her handbag. I kept her in my sight until she stepped out of the store without paying. I approached her and identified myself as a security officer. On hearing this she sped off. I chased after her and apprehended her in the middle of a car park. I felt I could handle her on my own. This was until a gentleman approached with a knife and threatened me. Because of my training I eventually managed to subdue him and take control of the situation. No one was injured.
Like me many security officers are faced with potentially dangerous situations every day but too many of them are inadequately trained to deal with unpleasant situations.
There needs to be three stages of training: Pre-licensing, Continuous development and Specialization
Pre Licensing
The SIA needs to recruit an adult literacy expert to work with industry professionals to design a training programme. The way the current programme is designed makes it impossible for anyone to absorb all the required information in 30 hours and be able to use it effectively.
Continuous Development
Along with the pre-licensing course work, there needs to be an in-house course designed for security companies that will be used internally to further develop new & seasoned security officers. Developments in security legislation should be incorporated into any continuous training & development programme. Security officers should also be assessed every 3 years to ensure that they are complying with the legislation. The renewal of their license will depend on their continued development and knowledge of the industry…
Specialised Training
If Security officers expect to be treated like professionals, then we must begin to behave as professionals. There is no professional in the world that undergoes only 30 hours of training in their lifetime. With the barrier for entry into the security industry so low we need to raise the level of training to give us the extra recognition we require to be seen as a professional industry.
Conclusion
In this country we have a few of the best institutions in the world: the BBC, Oxford & Cambridge, Scotland Yard, Fleet Street and above all the British Armed Forces. For centuries these institutions have been setting standards for the rest of the world to follow. The introduction of the SIA was another opportunity for Britain to set the standard and create a model of professionalism within the private security industry for the rest of the world to copy and learn from. After all we were the first country to introduce the concept of licensing in the security industry. However, the current structure is not designed for the extra tasks it is expected to undertake. The SIA was created to license security officers and accredit security companies.
Therefore professionalizing the private security Industry will require:
Redefining the mandate of the SIA and restructuring it with the appropriate framework and mechanisms Defining our role within the grand scheme of the security structure in the UK Creating a set of criteria for entry Revamping the training regime to make it fit for purpose
The UK private security industry is seen by some as a gravy train, run by people who have never worked a single day as a security officer. If we are truly serious about professionalizing the industry, we will need to engage with those who understand the challenges facing the various stake holders.
Let those who regulate the security industry be reminded that there is no place in the 21st century for an institution that is run along the lines that made it fit for purpose in the sixteenth century.
Help With The Police Numeracy Tests
Many have this concerted admiration for the police and make it their singular obsession to become a law enforcement officer. However these days the police tests are becoming difficult so much so that only the fittest manage to survive. Their dream of joining the police force will suffer a jolt if they have not worked hard at facing the many tests that they are required to pass.
Much planning has to go into the preparation, replete with knowledge of what you have to study and how and where to source this information. It is said that visiting sites like “police path” and Sgt. Goday’s impartation of how to acquire oral skills have greatly aided many aspirants.
The first step in police tests is called “Application process” which many of us also know of as the entrance exam. All your efforts should be harnessed at garnering sufficient information and knowledge to face your first hurdle with ease. Crossing this process is paramount because you can go no further in your career ambition without passing these tests. Many, who attend these tests and fail, face so much of disappointment that they shy away from making another attempt. Shakespeare had written that ‘Ambition should be of sterner stuff” and this should be the mantra of every police job enthusiast.
Intelligence and common sense are two God given gifts to humans and play an extremely important role in the next police test process which is known as “Assessment Test”. Before you attend this process, make sure to get hold of previous years’ question papers on this subject and familiarize yourself to the various kinds of questions that can be posed to you and also read and answers to these questions several times so that they may be imprinted in your mind, enabling you to write the tests calmly, peacefully, and successfully and go to the next step in your career graph.
The system of police tests in the UK has introduced what is called numerical testing where you have to answer 25 questions by picking the correct answers from a list of five alternatives per question given to you. The total time given is only 12 minutes and this is supposed to assess your familiarity and capability with numbers.
Your skills in communication and response to situations, which are very vital in a police man’s career, are tested by oral tests which more or less give an assessment of the candidate, especially his personality.
The importance of physical condition of the aspirant in police tests can never be denied and the physical tests play a major role in assessing whether he would be healthy and fit enough to take on the difficult and demanding job of a police officer.
The police tests are not easy to pass and you will need to practice these before you attend the assessment centre. If you would like further practice test questions click here: police recruitment
An Overview Of The Police Recruitment Process
Many children and even adults later on, have this fascination to join the police force and don the imposing uniform of a police officer. However, the competition is so strong that the aspirants have to put in real hard work to be able to realize their dreams of serving as a law enforcement officer and the sole route is by sitting for and passing the Police Tests.
Here again, you must know properly what to study and how to prepare for the exams so as to leave your competition far behind. There are two aspects to the police tests. They are the written side and the oral side. Plenty of information on preparing for police tests is available from the internet.
The first step in police tests is to appear through what is called an application process. Failure in this process will block your chances of moving towards your goal of joining the local force. The first attempt and failure in it normally disheartens many an aspirant from trying again. However if you have worked hard at preparing for the application stage tests, you can come out with flying colors to pass your first hurdle. Take your steps only one at a time which means concentrate all your efforts to pass the tests immediately in front of you and not to think of the bigger picture.
Assessment tests: S some of the major police tests pertain to written tests to assess your intelligence and common sense along with your literacy level and spelling ability. The saying, “There is no substitute for hard work” aptly describes the proper preparation for the assessment process. Repetitive study of the questions and answers of yester years would highly compliment your efforts in your ambition to become a police officer.
Numerical testing is another police test which has been introduced in the UK and requires you to answer 25 questions in 12 minutes with 5 options for each answer, in order to enable your assessors to understand your aptitude and understanding towards numbers.
The next important police test is oral. Normally this takes a few hours because your examiners believe that communication and general attitude are the most important features that a police officer should have and cherish.
Experts believe that the most important quality that should be attributable to a police officer is his capacity to absorb and retain details, however small they be, in your brain so as to be able to use it when the time arise. Many police tests normally end with a physical body verification to confirm your health and fitness.

The reason behind the choice of a vocation is amply answered by the rise in the local and international crime scene and the need to involve the general public in maintenance of law and order.

The latter pay scale of course depends largely on individual contribution to the job profile post professional training.

All the nuances of the job are amply and professionally deliberated upon at the time of the training provided. Police jobs are now part of an integral system that is well appraised from time to time. These appraisals make it really worth your while to implement training hands on and rise to ranks up the rung.
Today, a senior police officer in the UK and one who has obtained the rank of a sergeant actually draws starting salaries around 34,800 per annum. A police job calls for dedication, determination and a lot of devotion to the profile you are responsible for. It basically implies an assurance of social harmony to the citizens who place all their trust in you.
Police jobs of the 21st century involve a show of situation befitting demeanor and a calm influence especially in very difficult situations. The compensation: In more ways than one
Why choose the police force?
Well, this is of course a personal decision and a lot of the response to the query depends on the sources you tap for information. A self analysis lays a lot of importance on the fact that the vocation is more than fulfilling when it comes to integrity and solidarity of character.
On a more professional and career oriented front, the answer lies in the fact that Police jobs are rewarding in more than one ways.
Monetarily, the remuneration package is very appealing, while on the rostrum of appreciation, even if it is thankless at times, it is rewarded and acknowledged within the department at all times. Police jobs call for alertness and a vigilance that few other careers offer you a chance to display.
Team effort and individual contributions are all accounted for in a unique way, with ample of scope for enhancing the skills at hand.

The Return Of The Police: Sting, Summers And Copeland Are Back!
The Police reunited for an appearance on the 2007 Grammy Awards Show. Anyone familiar with Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland knew that a Grammy Awards Show would never be reason enough for the original band members to come together and suddenly decide to perform on television. It was obvious that this was some kind of reintroduction to the band. That suspicion was confirmed a day later when a press conference was held in Los Angeles to announce that tickets would soon be available for an upcoming tour. A group known for surprising the media, their fans and sometimes even themselves, had done so handily. It was that way since the beginning.
The original band was formed by Stewart Copeland as a trio that became a foursome sometime in the spring of 1977. By early summer, Strontium 90 appeared on the scene as a reinvented version of the same group. After having undergone some personnel shifts and adjustments, the band members were Sting, Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers and Henry Padovani. As Strontium 90, the band recorded a few demo tracks, played gigs in London and Paris and worked on perfecting their sound. Sometime in the summer of 1977 they began calling themselves The Police, a name originally chosen by Stewart Copeland.
Looking to get their sound on vinyl, The Police tried laying down some studio tracks in late July of 1977 with the help of music producer John Cale, a Welsh musician and one of the founding members of The Velvet Underground. The recording sessions went nowhere and revealed that Henry Padovani lacked the guitar skills needed to keep up with the others. As a result, Padovani left the band in early August. By the fall of 1977, The Police became the threesome of Sting, Summers and Copeland that we know so well. The trio with a unique sound bigger than the band was tailor made for the small clubs and venues of England’s Punk and new wave music scene. As a result, they became popular with British Fans.
After giving the recording studio another try, The Police had better luck. Roxanne was released as a single in early 1978. Can’t Stand Losing You, So Lonely and their first album, Outlandos d’Amour, followed later that year. Through a deal brokered by Stewart Copeland’s brother, Miles, A&M Records signed The Police to a recording contract and released Outlandos d’Amour in the USA.
In 1979, the band toured the USA to support their newly released singles and the first album. The press loved to describe them as three guys from England with bleached blond hair playing rocked up Jamaican Rebel Music driving around the USA in a cannibalized, overdue rental van filled with stolen instruments.
The blond hair was actually the result of a commercial they did to earn some quick money. Afterward, they decided to stay with the look. The trio did drive around from gig to gig in a leased Ford Cargo Van that had seen better days and was long past the original return date. The van contained ‘borrowed’ instruments and equipment. Actually, according to statements made by the band members during that time, they rented the instruments in New York City for a club date and forgot to return them until their tour was finished. It’s said the band made good on the extra charges for the van and instruments.
Their second album, Regatta De Blanc, was released in the fall of 1979. Walking on the Moon and Message in a Bottle received a huge amount of airplay and helped fill most of their shows to overflowing. In November of 1979, I was lucky enough to squeeze into My Father’s Place on Long Island to watch an amazing performance by The Police. The event was simulcast on WLIR, Long Island’s New Music Radio Station at that time. A friend later provided me with an audiocassette of the performance. I wore that cassette out.
The third album by The Police, Zenyatta Mondatta, was released in October of 1980. The record hit number one in the UK and number five in the USA against tough competition which included AC/DC, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Queen and Bruce Springsteen to name a few. Songs like Driven To Tears and Don’t Stand So Close To Me could be heard playing constantly on the radio. Despite all that radio play, people didn’t tire of their sound and always seemed to want more.
Sting’s newly acquired Star Power as the band front man, an actor and solo musician in his own right gave him a constant edge over Steward Copeland. Copeland was his most vocal critic in the band and the two actually got into fistfights on several occasions. It probably didn’t help that managers, concert promoters, publicity agents and record companies all knew there would be no Police or paycheck without Sting and likely took his side on many issues. That must have driven Copeland nuts. Despite the infighting, the band members were still able to agree enough at that time to get down to business and move the band forward.
In 1981, just one year after their third album was released, their fourth album hit the stores. Ghost in the Machine flew to a ranking of number one in the UK and number two in the USA. Spirits In The Material World, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic and Invisible Sun captured the imagination of fans and were placed in constant rotation on radio stations from coast to coast in the USA. These songs proved that the band could make occasional changes in their sound without evolving away from their fan base as others had.
In 1983, the band released Synchronicity, their fifth and final album to date. It reached number one in the UK and number one in the USA. The album won the group several Grammy Awards and lots of critical acclaim. Songs like Every Breath You Take, King of Pain and Wrapped Around Your Finger became instant favorites that crossed over musical formats and received a huge amount of airplay. Synchronicity II became a favorite song of rock and new music disc jockeys. Today, that album is considered a classic and much beloved by most fans and music critics.
Without an official announcement and with little fanfare, The Police went their separate ways when the Synchronicity Tour finally ended in the spring of 1984. Because of all the albums sold, concerts performed, airplay received and media attention during that last tour, most fans probably felt the band members were just taking a well-deserved break.
The Police reunited for three concerts that benefited Amnesty International in 1986. Unlike the Beatles, there must have been enough esprit de corps there to occasionally get back together for the right reasons. In 1992 the band members reluctantly performed two songs at Sting’s wedding reception after being pressured to do so by the “A” List of guests. That led nowhere.
In March of 2003, The Police played several songs together during a ceremony for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The event was broadcast on television. Unlike the charity concerts or spur of the moment wedding gig, the 2003 performance of the reunited band members gave fans reason to hope for more. It didn’t seem strained and even Sting said he was surprised at how easy it was for the guys to perform together again. That gig proved that the band members could play together and still have a good time. That gave fans a reason to hope for more, but in the end it was all up to one band member.
Sting hit it as big without The Police as he did with them. Anyone paying attention to radio, broadcast television or cable during the 1990′s could not escape him. The Soul Cages, Ten Summoner’s Tales, Bring On The Night and other albums brought the S man lots of attention, accolades and money. Few performers create the kind of musical presence that Sting does and that sells well.
I think the defining moment of his fame as a solo performer during the 1980s and 1990s came at one of his concerts. I happened to see a video filmed for some project about the S-man. After finishing the concert, Sting came back stage. It appeared that he had turned in a long performance and already done one or two encores. He looked thin, almost frail, couldn’t catch his breath, was bathed in sweat, had tight fitting clothes on and all but collapsed against a backstage wall. He was wearing at least four or five Cause Ribbons on his lapel and yet couldn’t get anyone to bring him a bottle of cold water. Sting had become a tool used by the entertainment industry as much as a Craftsman of it. Perhaps that is what brought him back to the band that started it all.
Sting says that he woke up one morning and thought that it was time for The Police to reunite. It may be that he was simply tired of constantly facing the music and everything that came with it all by himself. Even as the powerful front man of that legendary band, it wasn’t Sting and the Police. It was just The Police. As a fan, I always thought of the band as one entity, not one person. Maybe that was what Sting wanted after all his individual fame.
Most people probably think that Summers and Copeland were just sitting around waiting for the call from the S-man. Nothing could be further from the truth. Getting past the reality that both may have felt that ship had sailed along time ago, they have had lively and prosperous careers. Beyond his eighteen solo albums, Andy Summers started his career in 1965 and played with Eric Burden and The Animals, Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band, Dantalion’s Chariot and had many other successful collaborations and projects. Stewart Copeland is considered one of the world’s finest drummers and began his career in 1974. Beyond his work with bands like Curved Air, Animal Logic, Oyster Head and Klark Kent, Copeland has had an amazing number of collaborations and proven to be a prolific and very successful soundtrack composer. But just like Sting, it was The Police that probably brought them the kind of attention that lead to bigger and better things.
A press conference held at the famous Whiskey A-Go-Go in Los Angeles the morning after the Grammy Awards told the tale. The Police were back and ready to go on tour. The press event atmosphere was electric and featured Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland playing a set for reporters, invited guests and some lucky fans.
Reporters that were present seemed as surprised and shocked as fans. Most were in awe of what they were seeing, wondered if the reunion would last past the press event and seemed more interested in enjoying the spontaneous show than asking questions. Those that did ask questions kept it unusually light. While it could be that they were just burnt out from the Grammy’s, it was more likely that they weren’t use to dealing with a musically in your face band like The Police. Even Ozzy and his occasional reunions with Black Sabbath couldn’t create the kind of atmosphere The Police could.
Although the new album question is left unanswered at this writing and the future of the band past the tour remains unannounced, there is another question that I think fans would be interested in having answered. If arguments over the music and artistic differences broke them apart so many years ago, what really brought them back together? What made Sting suddenly decide the time was right. What made them all willing to face the same old arguments and pressures all over again? I’m guessing it was Synchronicity. Welcome back guys!

Considering how I remember my boss arguing with the owner over the phone about paying me $14/hr (owner looked-for $10/hr or less) I think he is likely to do it. I’m an Administrative Assistant making $14/hr. The Policing Of Years Gone By
Man being a social animal, the first ever need for an external force to curb violence must have definitely come with the first ever tryst with the social handicap. The volunteer step in of the brave heart has now given us a task force that bears the whole responsibility of maintaining civic harmony and peace.
In time police history has taken on a new meaning, one that not only steps back in time to jot down and take into account the first ever station or officer, but also the developments with regards to training and implementations of programs.
Integrating technology for the cause:
Today, there are a number of both online as well as offline resources that give you a detailed review of the history of this great civic body. The police presence worldwide has grown considerably since the humble beginnings during the reign of the Romans.
Called by different names in different regions, the task force is now not only associated with justice on the streets, but also homicide cases, animal and human rescue operations and domestic violence. This makes it clear for all to see that police history goes volumes, if not pages!
The people who are now part of the force are from the community they serve. This makes the police program one of outreach and social integrity. From ensuring that the criminal is taken to task to becoming witnesses in legal battles, these brave hearts risk all for your safety!
According to records on police history the story is one of individual volunteering to a social outreach program. Regions across the world pay tribute to the officers and seniors who strive for civic justice.
The task force has become one synonymous with courage, loyalty and justice, and rightly so. Police history records applaud all acts of bravery that these truly selfless people render without any personal gain, consistently putting their lives on the line.
A look at the various resources that give you a sneak peek at what’s what in police world also highlight the many developments within departments around the world. Today, police training is no more a geographically confined one.
Walking the extra mile:
Youth across the globe interested in making this task force a career options have all the right reasons for doing so. Throughout police history the training and implementation of various programs related to the duties at hand have been hands on. Today too, the training is hands on but the remuneration package has made a complete turn around.
The frills and concessions are luring youth and able bodied men and women from across the world to write yet another chapter in police history. With all due respect to the men and women from this task force who have risked their lives for a larger cause, the police force today is better equipped and tamper-proof.
Across Europe and especially the UK, becoming a part of the police force calls for more than just the willingness to serve without being prejudiced. It takes an attitude as a law and order enforcer to ensure civic safety and that of the government implementations throughout the region in question.

Joining The Police in The UK
The UK police force is one of the most diverse and interesting organisations in the world. It has members of every race, background, colour and religion and can provide a challenge, yet also a responsible position in society for the right person. Joining the police force in the UK could be a great career move for some people and may prove to be an exciting and active role to play.
There is no question that you have to be an appropriate person before joining the police force in the UK. There are many criteria to be assessed due to the very diverse and challenging nature of being a police man/woman. There are mathematical, spelling and personal tests to be carried out and of course, you must make the grade in the gym before being handed a truncheon and handcuffs.
There are, however, many rewarding aspects to becoming a police officer and these can make the job entirely worthwhile. The retirement age is much lower than in other professions and you can hardly put a price on job security in such a time of economic hardship. These are all very big positives and there are many other benefits, albeit smaller in magnitude such as gym usage and you will never have to do so much as one hour of jury service.
The job itself can be very rewarding given that you are an appropriate candidate. Firstly you can be giving something back to the community on a daily basis; very few people can claim to be doing that. There is also the chance to meet a whole range of new and interesting people and also some scope for career advancement. The pay isn’t particularly bad either and it will increase each year as you amass more and more experience.
Joining the police force in the UK is not for everyone however and only the most suitable applicants are ever chosen. As long as you are over the age of 18, or 16 in some cases such as PCSOs, you can apply to join the police force. The testing procedure is, of course, difficult but as long as you think that the job is right for you and you are committed to joining the force then you are likely to stand a very good chance of being accepted.
There is a great opportunity to become part of a team if you are lucky enough to joint the police force and this can be incredibly satisfying for many people. Being a part of a team can be rewarding and you could establish very long term friendships whilst working within the police.
To sum it up then: Joining the police in the UK is not a guaranteed outcome and you will have to work to get a position as well as possess the right attitude and level of responsibleness. Providing that you have all of these attributes and you are selected then it can be an incredibly rewarding career.

Retired Police ? What to do next
In the UK it is standard practice for police to work for 30 years, after which they are eligible for a full police pension. In England and Wales alone there are over 142,000 police officers and given that many would have started their journey in the police in their late teens or early twenties, it means they can expect to retire in their early 50’s. This is a lot earlier than most of us can look forward to, and is indeed a comparatively young age in which to find yourself at the end of your career.
So, what can a retired police officer do next? Many will of course enjoy their free time pursuing a variety of leisure interests, but for others, this can be a slightly boring or frustrating time and they may look to continue contributing towards society. The value ex-police officers can offer is sometimes unfairly undervalued but with an ever ageing workforce, their skills and experience are being increasingly seen as an extremely valuable asset to businesses in the private sector as well as within a continuing public servant role.
In fact, Scotland’s police chiefs have recently announced they are considering plans to draft retired police officers in to bolster their staff numbers should there be a worsening of the swine flu (or any other) epidemic. Be that as it may, what are the more immediate options for retired police officers looking to get back into work after so many years on the force?
Well, many retired police may continue to work in law enforcement jobs but within a slightly different setting. For example there are many opportunities in Anti-Social Behaviour, Licensing, Noise Pollution, Waste Services, Parking / Traffic, Planning, CCTV, Community Safety to name but a few. All of these kinds of job vacancies would highly value the experience brought from thirty years in the force. This would allow full utilisation of all the skills that have been built up, with the opportunity to apply them in a new and exciting environment working for a whole host of different organisations.
Alternatively, there are a number of police jobs as civilian support within the various police forces, or a move into fraud investigation could be considered. The most important thing to remember is that your skills will be highly values by a number of different employers across all sectors, so as long as you are prepared for a fresh challenge, this could be a very exciting time in your life if you are approaching police retirement. If you are not sure what to do next, speaking to your friends, family and colleagues is a great place to start, but also consider contacting an experienced recruitment consultant who understands your specific needs and ambitions can certainly help put you on the path to your new vocation in life.
